We all want to encourage independence in our children. Two ways of doing this are 1) be a good listener. Being a good listener means, while your child is talking, you are sincerely trying to understand what he is saying. And 2) avoid over-parenting. Over-parenting involves making frequent, unnecessary, and worrisome comments to your children, which makes them feel aggravated and put down. They hear you saying, "You're incompetent; there's not much you can do on your own without my supervision and direction." These two things are not always easy to do, but it's important to keep trying! |
